The Recession Hits Home
The U.S. economy is in a downturn the likes of which hasn’t been seen since The Great Depression. Businesses have laid off workers. Some others, like Circuit City pictured here, have gone out of business, altogether. This economic situation presents many challenges for the average person, particularly a college student looking for an internship or their first job. The E-News U. Magazine staff investigated the effects of the economy for the Spring-Summer 2009 issue. They found that jobs are hard to come by and internships are even less plentiful as companies cut back in the fight to stay alive. This is probably no more prevalent than in the media industry. Some people are having to settle for unpaid internships. And graduating seniors, eager to make it on their own, are having to temper their expectations for the time being and consider other options, like jobs outside of their field, graduate school or the unfathomable: moving back home.
